Cyber Security Learning Lab: Investigations in the Darknet

February, 19, 2019, 09:00 – 17:00

Location: Fraunhofer SIT | Rheinstraße 75| Darmstadt

The participants of this one-day training will gain in-depth knowledge of the Internet and the Darknet by understanding the theoretical basics. Practical and exciting exercises on self-imposed websites in the Darknet ensure that they can practice and apply their new knowledge. After the seminar, the participants will be able to assess more efficiently, based on the newly learned skills, how to interpret communication processes in the Darknet, but also in the "free Internet". In addition, they can assess the opportunities and risks of anonymity and censorship freedom in the Darknet.

The ability to communicate digitally in Darknet without leaving a trace is, on the one hand, an amplifier for the free exchange of views. On the other hand, it also forms the basis for illegal activities that exist in the protection of anonymity without regulatory possibilities. This tension between freedom and security is a sensitive topic and more relevant than ever. Investigators, prosecutors, forensic experts and journalists alike need to become familiar with this topic in order to understand and properly evaluate Darknet activities and reports.
